1st Grade Dot Day Celebration

Some of you may remember last year's school wide celebration of Dot Day (see here). Together, students in grades 1-8 created a magnificent, show-stopping art installation. Because our sweet little Kindergarteners were so new on the first day of art class, I felt it would have been too overwhelming for them to participate.

Enter this year's first graders. Experienced, wise, and ready for action!
Day One in the Art Studio: reading The Dot by Peter Reynolds.

We learned that every person's dot is different.
Special.
Unique.
Just because it's theirs.
It's their "mark".  Make your mark on the world. Contribute your creativity, your uniqueness. The world will be a better place because you did.

September Happenings

Oh yes! We're back in the SJS Art Studio!
Our first September art class always means business: organizing, rules, and procedures. Selecting seats. Practicing fire drills. Not exactly our favorite things to do... but definitely necessary for a successful and productive year. We managed to squeeze in some creativity by designing our new art journal covers in grades four through eight!  Some students are finished, but for many, their design remains a work in progress.

Capturing a moment in time, Kindergarten and First Graders told a story about themselves. Children drew a self portrait showing their favorite clothes and activities.  I promised to hold these artworks very safely until the last day of art class when children will draw a new self-portrait story.  It will be fun to compare the two drawings to see how each child has changed!

Here are a few glimpses of what's happening in the studio this week:

Second graders create abstract fantasy creatures while learning about the Spanish artist, Joan Miro.

Eighth graders work collaboratively to research one of Pablo Picasso's art styles.

Decoupaging the surface of a milk jug with analogous colors, fifth graders  prepare to design and construct an African inspired mask. Right now, though, it's all about the color. Thanks for washing out those milk jugs, parents!

Definitely not winning any awards for penmanship here... but really liking our new "I CAN" board.

Ready, Set ,Go!

J

SJS Art Studio is ready for a new school year... even our animal friends are curious about what we'll learn!

I get to meet my awesome artists this week!

We'll spend our year discovering the WONDER in art.

We'll learn about all kinds of artists.
And figure out important questions like "Who are those Ninja Turtles anyway?"...

Stay Tuned and check back often to see what we're up to!
